Nigeria, Nollywood what a trip!

The last month of 2010, I decide to pick up a job to film a local educational movie on HIV/ AIDS for the Rivers State, in Nigeria. 3 weeks of sweat under armed guard with AK47's based in the bush in a small village called Obonoma in the Niger Delta.

It was an awesome experience, looking back. The people were very friendly and always willing to help.

We had a small crew, everybody was trying to do more then one job, sometimes more then two. It made things tough but we handled it. We finished the job. The crane and dolly were ridiculous fabrications. I have never seen something like that before. So makeshift I had a big lump in my throat every time I saw the red one being raised with it. I felt the anguish and pain the Assistant Camera Abiola was going through. It looked like it could snap off at any given time.

Out of all the equipment I had requested, I received only 5 redheads, 2 blondes and 2 2 foot 4 bank Kino's. Its a miracle the distribution box never caught a light. Made from your general household plug points.

Most of the shoot happened during the day. With no polly or scrim or blackout. We had to fabricate it all.

Even my flicker box. With good old "Baraqaan" waving a way with a twig with a few leaves.

Macgyver would be so proud, anything can be done. And if Macgyver can't do it I know plenty Nigerians who can.

Now I am just waiting to grade the edit.

Heritage day "Boerie Boy"

Had some fun last week taking pictures of local Cape Town Comedian Paul Snodgrass.

Can't say I ever thought I would have imagined this shoot taking place.

Thanks Lady Gaga for the inspiration.

The idea and concept originated, and was pulled off by no other then Tarryn Page.

Underwater

Finally on the path to becoming a underwater cameraman, I just got my PADI Open Water, next up the Advanced, then a specialisation in Nitro and from there on to finishing my Dive Masters.

The seed has finally been planted. The underwater world is like swimming in a giant aquarium. From the couple of dives I have done I am quite amazed at how colorful the seabed is around the Cape Peninsula.

Can't wait to start the advanced course and hit the 30m mark.

"Umlilo" Trailer shoot

AKSP Motion Pictures just did a shoot for a marketing trailer of a feature named "Umlilo". Exhausting work but we got it done. We would like to thank Magus Visual, Take 2 and Camerastation for their assistance.

Currently the edit is being done. I am looking forward to the grading process.

Shot on a Sony EX3. Lit with the most basic lighting kit; blondes and redheads.

Green Screen "Sports Millionaire"

This week, I was lighting a green screen. Found a perfect studio out by Cinegate, called Southern Lights Studio. Shaun was more then helpful. A awesome studio with a lot of space. They have to controlled rigs from which we hung, 6 space lights and 4 2K's.

The shoot was for a pilot for a "Sport Millionaire" show based in Nigeria.

I finally got in touch with a local car spinning crew, and I was privlidged to see them in action swerving, drifting, spinning, and totally wrecking their tyres. I even went for a spin. The sensation is a pure adrenalin high, but very short lived.

The crew at SPINTRIX were awesome.

This is them and their fellow crews EXACT and HELLRIDE spinners in action.

Janie Bay Music Video, AKSP motion pictures

A lots happened since the start of the new year, first off we shot a music video for Janie Bay. It was my first time working with the Canon 5d and I love it. Its a awesome camera for low budget, and low light. Who would have ever thought 5 years ago that we would be shooting a music video on this, a stills camera.

Its been a while... Siyakolhwa, Zimbabwe....

Its been about 2 months since I last blogged, I have just recently come back from Zimbabwe where I was working on a documentary based on the Book, the Last Resort, by Douglas Rogers as a back story.

It was a good two weeks. Zimbabwe is definitely moving in the right direction. The shops were stocked and everybody is just carrying on with their day to day lives. The American Dollar has helped tremendously.

Brought back some cheap smokes, 5 $ a carton, coffee and a shongololo who stowed away in my backpack and is currently sightseeing the arse end of signal hill.

Before then I was working in studio on a kiddies show called Siyakolhwa, produced by X Con films. A religious show with a muppet take on things.

Its good to be back in Cape Town.

With regards to the feature. They have just wrapped on production today. Well done! Guys

Miyabi, Photo Shoot

On Friday the 11th of September, I did a photo shoot for Miyabi, who specialize in tops and dresses for women. The shoot went well considering the girls have never modeled before and needed a lot of direction. We used one prominent location, a house in Plumstead, a friend of the designer, Sandalene. Her garden was used for most of the shots, mixing flash with daylight.

4th DRAFT, FINALLY PRE PROD ON "KARKAS" CAN BEGIN!

The 4th draft has just been completed over the weekend by Rudi Steyn, finally pre production can commence. I have been anticipating this draft of the script ever since coming on board at the beginning of August. So far we have only established an overarching light design for the film.

Its time to shotlist, storyboard and break down each and every scene.

Just had it printed by the print shop today. I am about to make myself a cup of coffee and read it.

KARKAS [Horror feature] TEST #1

On the weekend of the 15th of August I DOP on a test shoot for "KARKAS"[Afrikaans for Carcass]. The feature is to be shot at the end of November. You can follow the pre production process on their facebook fanpage.

I unfortunately did not operate the camera although I wish I did. Today I ve just come back from Telecine. The test shoot is being edited for marketing purposes. We shot on 16mm on 500T vision 3, the latitude on this stock is incredible and there is hardly any grain.

There will be future tests before we shoot the feature in November.

By the end of this week I ll have received another draft of the screenplay.

Lu Chase Music Video Shoot

This weekend I helped out my friends at AKSP productions to light a music video shoot for Lu Chase. The track was composed by Paul Van Zyl. The video will be off to London in a month's time.

Later this week we will be completing the car interior sequences.

My First Post, "Industry" Promo shoot

Since I have a website www.robbeugelink.com I thought I should start posting my own blog so that all of you out there can keep up with the current projects I am involved with. Just recently I finished shooting a promo for Vuzu, the New Go Channel. The footage is in post. Above are some of the behind the scenes' pics. We shot on the Panasonic HVX200, lighting the location with kino's from above.

As soon as the footage has been edited, it will be posted. Currently they are busy with the sound mix.

The promo is to be used as a working tool to pitch the series "Industry". Which is about 4 young guys trying to make it in Cape Town's Entertainment/ Film Industry. A series with a Entourage feel but with a more rustic Office, Extras Look.
